The American Geophysical Union annual conference is a chance for the climate science community to come together. To take advantage of the conference’s presence in San Francisco, I partnered with The Long Now Foundation to do a public event bringing some of the science behind the IPCC’s report to the public.
Leveraging a relationship with the head of the IPCC Working Group IV, we educated the audience about the concept of a carbon budget and measures that can be taken to stretch it out as long as possible. This event came at a time when these climate considerations were still rarely covered in media. We brought additional attention to the topics through inclusion of a panel of well known Bay Area figures associated with sustainability and innovation like Saul Griffith, Susan Burns, and Paul Hawken.
